SOTRALENTZ Métal Industries finds an alternative to the shortage of qualified personnel

Based in Drulingen for several generations, SOTRALENTZ Métal Industries designs and manufactures large scale sheet metal components.

With around 220 employees on its books, the subsidiary of the SOTRALENTZ Group has seen its workforce diminish over the years.
At the present time, SOTRALENTZ Métal Industries is experiencing difficulties in recruiting qualified labour in its core business: boiler work.

The DRULINGEN employment catchment area has a relatively low rate of unemployment. In addition, the initial boiler work training sections are operating understaffed because of a shortage of candidates and are unable to meet the very specific needs (plate metal) of SOTRALENTZ. Because of this, SOTRALENTZ Métal Industries can no longer recruit qualified welders or boilermakers.

n order to combat the shortage of qualification, SOTRALENTZ is setting up a training project which consists in training job seekers in sheet metal welding on thick metal plate. The objective is to recruit and train ten job seekers in the profession of welder in one year with a view to employing them full time.

Progress of the project: Twelve trainees have been pre-qualified for this training. In order that the group has a homogenous level, a 5-month training course has been given by the ITC training centre in DRULINGEN on the basic skills:
- Refresher course on French, Maths and logical reasoning
- Initiation in reading drawings, technical vocabulary, safety awareness, professional calculations, initiation in welding, etc.
- Awareness of communication, working in a group, the economic rôle of the company.

The candidates are then employed by GEIQ Indus Alsace and hired out to SOTRALENTZ for one year, with around 525 hours' training in an organisation outside the company (ITC).

At the end of pre-qualification, nine trainees wanted to continue their training.

To ensure the success of the operation in terms passing exams and completion of the cycle, particular efforts have been made on the supervision of employees. Each employee is under permanent supervision by two tutors specially trained for this purpose.

One is a company employee, handling the vocational tutoring needed for the acquisition of the expertise unique to SMI and the transferability of theoretical knowledge into vocational competencies. The second tutor is in charge of development at GEIQ INDUS ALSACE, handling the socio-professional supervision of the employee. The tutors are also in permanent contact with ITC instructors.
The professionalisation contract is finally validated by a CQPM (Certificate of Parity Qualification in Metallurgy), “industrial welder” or “industrial boilermaker”. The CQPM is the qualification tool unique to the UIMM (branch of metallurgy). It covers a broad range of skilled jobs, which offers the possibility for companies to qualify their employees in their profession, even when very specialised.

Out of the seven candidates who completed the training course, six passed the welder's exams and all obtained their welder's licence but two failed the CQPM. All of them were nonetheless taken on.
The seventh trainee specialised in boiler making and will shortly take his CQPM boilermaker exams.

Funding of training for the Professionalisation Contract is handled by the parity organisation which receives training funds from GEIQ INDUS ALSACE, i.e. ADEFIM 67.
Co-funding has also been requested from Région Alsace by means of FSE II. As for candidates' salaries, they were taken care of by the company via INDUS ALSACE.

The diplomas will be awarded on Friday, 28 April 06 on the premises of SOTRALENTZ at 18h00 where a small reception will be given to thank the various people who have participated in the successful completion of the project.
